Albert Einstein wielded a powerful weapon: one of the greatest scientific minds in the history of humanity, and he wielded it against Christianity. He aimed toward the very first verse of the Bible. "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth."
The great Einsteins' goal was to prove that the universe was eternal and therefore had no absolute beginning. But this theory collapsed. Einstein instead proved that indeed, the universe had an absolute beginning, and today his theory of relativity is one of the strongest indicators of the Big Bang; the beginning.
Everything within our natural realm has an absolute beginning. But for something to begin, something else must end. For a Christian to life to begin, the previous life must end (Philosophically, of course. Not physically.). The Christian cannot call themselves a true Christian if the residual affects of their previous life are still working in them.
When a new soul learns the truth of God, they must then become accountable to Him. Life itself must change, in a good way, but change nonetheless. One of the most common issues that people face during the transitional process is regarding cigarettes. Can there be a smoking Christian?
The answer is no.
"For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's." - 1 Corinthians 6:20
Does smoking cigarettes glorify God? People should look at Christianity and see that we are empowered by Jesus. We do not appear to be empowered when the church door is crowded with smokers. No, instead, people will see weakness and assume that God is not working in us. Smoking drags Gods' name through the dirt!
"And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit." Ephesians 5:18
Instead of turning their problems to God, the smoker will turn them to the cigarette. This reduces prayer and trust in God.
But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified. Corinthians 9:27
Is smoking cigarettes being 'under control'? Or is it definitively out of control?
Know you not that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy. 1 Corinthians 3:16-17
With modern science, we have sufficient knowledge of the affect smoking has on the body. We know beyond any reasonable doubt that smoking does in fact harm the body; therefore it harms the temple of God.
"There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it" 1 Corinthians 10:13
"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" 1 John 1:9
It is time to stop living in denial. You know that smoking is a sin. One day you will be cross-examined and your thin wall of excuses will be ripped to shreds. Admit to yourself that this is a sin, confess it the Lord and He will see you through the withdrawal process.
