One with a little philosophical training might halt this article after reading the title. Humanity cannot poison itself anymore than the AIDS virus can infect itself with the AIDS virus. Clearly I meant it to be taken in no such manner, so I hope not to receive e-mails assuring me that this title is logically contradictory.
What I rather intend to express is that humanity, for an array of different motives, never ceases to abhor me. The Cruscades; those who thought it necessary to kill as a consequence of God's will. The Holocaust; the extrapolation of the flourishing of the human race. For lack of a better term, it was glorified addition by subtraction. Jihad 9/11; men believed that they could only assure their salvation by commiting what the Qur'an describes as a 'heavy deed'.
What I find strange about this last one is that it is not a textual misinterpretation or something that would be condemned by the Islamic nation. Rather, these men were properly fulfilling their duties to the Qur'an. That is to say that if the Qur'an is true, all of the Muslims who sacrificed their lives in an effort to take that of a non-believer have risen to glory and immortality.
So that somebody actually wrote such a book in anticipation of the result that has occurred is more confusing than I can express. The only answer that I have is that somebody wrote it to acheive personal fame and carnal glory. It seems to me that to the end of our personal legacies, we commit these atrocities. Men become consumed in themselves and venture every length to fulfill any temptation that happens upon them.
I cannot conceive of another sentient, intelligent species that would think it was morally indifferent to rape little children. Yet we do, and that is our cosmic legacy. Our treatment of each other, our self-idolatry, and our inability to live together in peace is the most note-worthy accomplishment of humanities' relatively short existence.
It is almost politically incorrect to support life, love, and equality. People are so petrified that they might face an inconvenience that they will allow doctors to murder their unborn children. I can certainly indicate the logical inadequacies of the pro-choice case, which I did in my article Prochoice Abortion Is Logically Incoherent. But morally, it is just a completely absurd notion to think that the fact of convenience would render a baby dispensable.
It seems to me that in every corner that we find convenience or desire, we see westerners flocking there. The dominate position of the United Kingdom is one of atheism, and the United States seems to be following closely behind. Humanity is literally denying God, and after talking to many of those who hold this position, I have concluded that they take this position for no real intellectual reason. It is often an offshoot of their strictly religious upbringing, or an opposition to moral accountability.
This self-indulgence is one of the worst varieties, for it invites many other forms of self-indulgence, such as abortion, doctor assisted suicided, and many other manifestations of secular morality that even atheists, such as Doctor Sam Harris have blatantly stated their opposition to.
The churches do not respond to these issues properly. Rather in many cases, they conform and accept. They contort Christianity to align with the moral free-fall that is currently occurring.
Though I would not say that ours is merely a social or political issue that may be solved by a some politician. It is just humanity. We have found a clever way to maintain a civilization, while being just as evil and maintaining our self-idolatry. We may not have angry men hanging others for ethnicity in our cities. There might not be pistols on our sides and many of us have probably never seen a human corpse.
We lack elements such as this in our society and as a consequence, we have the illusion of civilization. Alas men are still as corrupt as they always were. As basic instinct, girls tease other girls that have some fundamental social difference. Con-men and scammers try to steal money from poor people. We do not protect our weak. We take what we can from them and try to get away before we have to look them in the eye.
Society is predicated upon people like this. Politicians are adviced to say anything to acheive votes and win elections. Lawyers and business men offer a polite front to the end of getting something out of others. Poor folks are not necessarily better; they fiend for money and wish they could fulfill their innate desires. People only care about themselves. Society is not defined by people working together. Society is defined by people working against each other.
That is why the verse, "Love your neighbor as yourself," means so much. Only when obeyed can we truly say that we have a society. Instead, humanity is made of individuals who think, "they will get me if I don't get them first."
This is what Jesus meant when he said that we are not of this world. It is in our love for each other that people will know that we are his. This is why it is the worst atrocity of all when Christians live in hatred and in sin and in anger. The world knows your Father not by you, and therefore the Father will know you not.
When people think of Christians, they think not of what we offer to the world but of what we take. They think of the priests that rape children, the abortion protesters who burned a doctors' office to the ground, the men and women who persecute homosexuals to the point that they commit suicide. They see this because Christianity is not immune to the foul touch of men. Christianity has been poisoned just as the rest of the world has.
Let me submit to you that this is exactly what Jesus promised, and this is precisely the problem that he came to solve. "I come not to call the righteous," he said, in Matthew 9:9-13, "but the sinners. It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick."
God looked upon humanity; the same humanity and the same nature that reigns today in sheer disgust. He abhorred us. God saw the filth, the death camps, the corruption, the greed and the self-idolatry. But alas, he did not abandon them; he instead sent a guide, because he loved them, and he saw the potential in each of them.
Now, as one reads this article, one might think, "That's not me. That's everyone else. I agree, society is terrible." But I would challenge that. When was the last time that you committed any sin? Told a lie, hated, had lust, stolen something, et cetera. We are all guilty. God is looking at a bunch of guilty criminals. It is only by faith in Jesus and repentence can our charges be dropped. The moment we do that, God will rid of our disgusting past that we bear.
Our very nature is the disease, and Jesus Christ is the cure.
